Mentoring

"One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination." - John C. Maxwell

Calling all Mentors!

Prince's Operation Entrepreneur (POE) is proud to announce the launch of Mentor a Veteran! In January 2019, the Mentor a Veteran program will hand-match graduates of our boot camps and other veteran entrepreneurs with mentors who are entrepreneurs themselves or members of the business community.

Over the course of six-months, mentors will work with veteran entrepreneurs (mentees) to test their business plans and act as vital counsel when roadblocks inevitably arise. Volunteer mentors are being recruited based on their professional qualifications, entrepreneurial experience, and passion for the cause.

The goals include:
• increasing confidence for veteran entrepreneurs
• complementing the network of support for releasing veterans
• a higher success rate for veteran businesses
• a better understanding of today's veteran

ABOUT POE

Founded in 2012, Prince’s Operation Entrepreneur (POE) has become the hub of entrepreneurship for the Canadian military community. By engaging military, civilian, academic, and corporate collaborators, plus hundreds of volunteers, POE provides a continuum of training and support services needed for veterans and their families to start and grow successful businesses.

For veterans, entrepreneurship provides three key elements necessary for a successful transition to civilian life: a new life purpose, a new group identity, and an opportunity to continue to serve.

As of Fall 2018, 449 have graduated from one of 23 seven-day business boot camps and started over 370 businesses; 2000 could-be entrepreneurs have explored second career options at one of 83 introductory one-day workshops; and hundreds more have taken advantage of easily accessible online support services and confidence boosting networking opportunities.

In 2016, POE launched the online business directory buyveteran.ca. The 2017 #BuyVeteran campaign drew the attention of 1.1 million Canadians providing them the opportunity to support veterans and their families year-round. The 2018 #BuyVeteran campaign runs November 1-10, 2018.

With support from generous sponsors and donors, all Prince's Trust Canada's programs and services are offered free.

The importance and benefits of having a mentor and continuously making connections is central in all our training. Mentor a Veteran will run over six months with mentor and mentee each committing to spend 2-4 hours per month on the relationship. Ideally the mentoring will be done in person in addition to Skype or telephone to help address business and personal growth objectives. Remote options will be considered for out of range mentors or mentees.

Your mentee will be a veteran entrepreneur and graduate of our seven-day entrepreneurial boot camp or equivalent stage, who is ready to take actionable steps in improving his or her business as demonstrated by a robust program application. Mentees agree to commit 2-4 hours per month over six months in addition to time spent applying their learning.

You are an entrepreneur or business professional, with or without experience in the military, who is able to provide perspective, advice and support for a veteran. You are willing to commit 2-4 hours per month to the program over six months. The six-months starts after first contact with your mentee.

The program includes a robust intake process for optimal matching, training for both mentor and mentee.  Support in goal and boundary setting are provided to set up the mentoring relationship for success. Check-ins and support from the POE team will help mentors and mentees troubleshoot challenges, mitigate barriers and issues of fit, and celebrate successes.
